Glen W. Boles

Glen was born in New Brunswick in 1934, and moved to Calgary in 1953. As a young boy he spent most of his spare time taking part in sports, sketching and roaming the woods appreciating nature. During 1957 he was persuaded to go climbing by fellow worker Heinz Kahl a transplanted Bavarian. Through Kahl and English climber, Brian Greenwood he was introduced to the more difficult side of climbing.

Glen has taken part in many facets of mountaineering from expedition climbing to mountain rescue. He has climbed in the St Elias Range of the Yukon & Alaska, as a member of the YACE Expedition, the Alps of Europe and extensively in the Rockies and Interior Ranges of British Columbia, summiting on close to 600 peaks. His first love though are the Canadian Rockies where he has participated in many new routes and first ascents. During the late 1960's and early 70's he began climbing with the climbers who became known as the "Grizzly Group"

Also an avid skier, he has enjoyed cross country skiing, ski mountaineering and downhill skiing over the years, having spent 13 years as a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System. At present he is a member of the Snow Hosts program at the Lake Louise ski area, having started in 1991.

As a member of the Alpine Club of Canada since 1960, he was a board member during 1974 & 1975. He received the Silver Rope in 1971, a Service award in 1993, was patron of the Guide's Ball in 1993 and became an Honorary member in 1996, then nominated as the Honorary President in 2005. He is also an Honorary member of the Calgary Mountain Club and an Honorary member of the American Alpine Club. He received the Bill March "Summit of Excellence Award" at the Banff Mountain Film Festival in 2005.

From his mountain experiences he has gained a keen interest in drawing, photography and writing, he was co-author of two editions of The Climbers Guide to the Canadian Rockies -South and combined with Bill Putnam and Roger Laurilla to produce the book "Place Names in the Canadian Alps" in 1990, revised in 2006 to "Place Names of the Canadian Mountains". During 2006 he came out with a coffee table type book of his black and white photography and his pen and pencil drawings, it is called Glen Boles My Mountain Album. He also paints in acrylics.

Glen retired in 1991 having spent thirty five and a half years with the Waterworks Division of the City of Calgary Engineering Dept. The last eighteen years as the Waterworks Planner. He has been married to his wife Elizabeth since 1965 and resides in Cochrane, Alberta.
